Anathar counterattack before dealing damage (No first strike involved)?

I just fought an opponent who used Anathar.
I had an unrighteous brute that met it in combat. My brute, who did not have first strike, hit his anathar and changed control WITHOUT taking damage from the fight with Anathar.
Is this intentional? Did anathar get modified?

I'm playing with that Anathar and there is still a bug I think. Whan he counter-attacks and survives I'm supposed to take control over my opponents creature but instead my opponent takes control of a random creature of my own. I have duplicated this 3 times.
